Peritoneal Mesothelioma is a type of cancer disease. Found rare and caused by asbestos disclosure. It is a tumor in serous surface. The origin of the disease takes place in abdomen, in the mesothelial cells that form a membranous layer called the peritoneum. Peritoneum is the layer of serous membrane form the lining of abdominal cavity. It consists of two sub-layers-The parietal and visceral layers. These layers surround the abdomen together; protect its organs and abdomen from cavity. The infection can arise in any layer. Clinically it is difficult to get right diagnose as the disease symptoms take many years to discover. It develops when the asbestos fibers fill up the gap between the mesothelial cells.
The most common symptoms are abdominal pain, abdominal swelling, sudden weight loss, anorexia, ascites and shortness of breath. There are two ways to overcome the disease clinically-intestinal obstruction or surgery in acute stage. The disease can be suspected by X-ray, CT-scan, biopsy and microscope examination. If the disease is unable to detect or not diagnose well the result would tuberculosis or heart failure. For abdomen cancer if doctor performs a laparoscopy he make small slit in the abdomen for examine the tissues in the abdomen cavity. The other diagnose will be an extensive surgery. Peritoneal Mesothelioma in early stages usually result in disfunctioning of lungs and kidney and in advanced stages it spread in all other parts of the body. In U.S. approximately 10% to 20% patients are diagnose with this.
Peritoneal Mesothelioma develops when a person is in an activity where he/she inhaled asbestos or any other asbestos particulars through dust or in any form. For instance job of flooring, roof shingles, cement or working with heavy machineries etc. Washing cloths of the diseased patient can often resulted in transfer of disease. However, it has been reported without any exposure to asbestos.
